Visceral Words

ECHO: I hear my ancestors
As I stand here today,
I pay homage
A visceral call and response system of creativity, remembrance and the request for spiritual wisdom

MEMORY: The great Elégua, the guardian of the gates, advocator for those who suffered injustice
Cultivated on plantations, offerings of rum and tobacco are for you
I hear rhythms produced from the forced labour of slavery

RENEWAL: O’Elégua, open a door for me as I tell a story
The notion of belief
and the power of recovery through creative process
The process of change through renewal observed
through death, determination and spirit
